What Experts Say
Eye specialists favor fluorometholone over stronger steroids when inflammation needs weeks of treatment, since it carries a comparatively lower risk of raising intraocular pressure. This makes it a common choice for post-surgical care and allergic eye conditions that need extended dosing.
Doctors routinely check intraocular pressure during prolonged fluorometholone therapy, since any corticosteroid can trigger steroid-induced glaucoma in susceptible patients. Tapering the dose gradually rather than stopping abruptly helps prevent rebound inflammation.
Physicians avoid prescribing this drop when a viral, fungal or untreated bacterial eye infection is suspected, since steroids can worsen these conditions and delay healing. Careful patient screening before starting therapy remains standard clinical practice.

Drug Interactions
- Other Ophthalmic Steroids: Combining multiple steroid eye drops increases the risk of raised eye pressure and other steroid side effects
- Other Eye Medicines: Using multiple eye drops together can dilute each other's effect if applied too close together, so space doses at least 5 minutes apart
- Live Vaccines: Systemic absorption is minimal, but caution is still advised with live vaccines during prolonged steroid eye therapy

- Raised Eye Pressure: Prolonged use can raise intraocular pressure and lead to steroid-induced glaucoma
