What Experts Say

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that stops bacteria from building a proper, stable cell wall as they try to grow and multiply. Some bacteria, however, produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase that destroys amoxicillin before it has a chance to work, making certain infections harder to treat with amoxicillin alone.

Drug Interactions

• Oral Anticoagulants: May increase bleeding risk and prolong clotting time; blood clotting should be monitored.

• Allopurinol: Increases the likelihood of a skin rash when combined with amoxicillin.
• Probenecid: Not recommended together, as it raises amoxicillin blood levels unpredictably.
