What Experts Say
Doctors regard intravenous artesunate as the preferred first line treatment for severe malaria because it clears parasites from the blood faster than quinine and lowers the risk of death in critical cases. The World Health Organization recommends artesunate injection over quinine for both adults and children with severe disease.
The 60mg strength is specifically formulated for children and patients with lower body weight, since dosing is calculated per kilogram rather than as a fixed adult amount. Physicians monitor patients closely for several weeks after treatment because delayed hemolysis, a drop in red blood cells, can occur even after the fever and parasites clear.
Malaria remains a genuine public health concern in Pakistan, particularly during monsoon season when mosquito breeding increases sharply. Physicians recommend that every patient completes a full course of oral artemisinin combination therapy after the injectable course, since artesunate alone given for a short period is not sufficient to fully clear the infection and prevent relapse.
