What Experts Say
Oncologists prescribe filgrastim, the active ingredient in Geneleukim Injection, to counter chemotherapy induced neutropenia, a drop in infection fighting white blood cells that raises the risk of serious infection. As a recombinant growth factor, it signals bone marrow to produce and release neutrophils faster than the body would on its own.
Dosing is calculated by body weight and timed carefully after chemotherapy, usually starting a day or more after the cycle ends and continuing until blood counts recover to a safe range. Doctors monitor complete blood counts closely during treatment, since starting too early or stopping too soon can blunt the intended benefit.
Pakistan carries a significant burden of hematologic and solid organ cancers where dose intensive chemotherapy is standard, making growth factor support an important tool for keeping treatment on schedule. Physicians weigh the cost and injection burden against the real reduction in febrile neutropenia episodes it provides.
