- Should not be used by patients allergic to isoflurane or other halogenated anaesthetics
- Should not be used after liver injury or unexplained jaundice linked to a halogenated anaesthetic
- Should not be used without a trained anaesthetist and proper monitoring
Risks and warnings
- Tell the anaesthetist: about past anaesthesia reactions in you or relatives, as malignant hyperthermia can be inherited
- Use with caution: if you have liver disease or repeated past anaesthetics, as liver inflammation may rarely occur
- Use with caution: if you have heart disease, as isoflurane may lower blood pressure or change heart rhythm
- Use with caution: in young children or pregnancy, and only if the anaesthetist judges the benefit worthwhile
- Tell your doctor about other medicines: as isoflurane may strengthen muscle relaxants, and opioids may lower the dose needed
- Avoid driving and alcohol: for at least 24 hours after anaesthesia, as drowsiness and slowed reactions may continue
- Overdose is managed in hospital: as too much vapour may slow breathing and lower blood pressure
