What Experts Say
Mefenamic acid belongs to the fenamate group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It blocks the cyclooxygenase enzymes responsible for producing prostaglandins, the chemical messengers that cause pain, cramping, and inflammation in the body. This makes it especially useful for period pain, where prostaglandin levels rise.
Doctors usually limit its use to short courses of five to seven days, since fenamates carry a higher risk of stomach irritation with prolonged use compared to some other NSAIDs. Taking it with food helps reduce this risk considerably. Adults are usually advised to take an initial higher dose followed by a lower maintenance dose every six hours.
This medicine is generally avoided in people with active stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, or significant kidney impairment. Anyone who notices black stools, severe abdominal pain, or persistent diarrhea while taking it should stop and consult a doctor. Long term daily use is not recommended without medical supervision.
