What Experts Say

Mefenamic acid is an NSAID from the fenamate group. It blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins, the chemicals behind pain, cramps and swelling. Lowering them eases discomfort within about an hour for many people. Its effect on period pain is especially well known, because prostaglandins drive uterine cramping.

It is used for short periods, usually up to 7 days. Taking it with food lowers the chance of stomach upset, and the lowest working dose is best. Long use raises the risk of ulcers and kidney strain. Anyone with a history of stomach trouble should tell the doctor before starting.

It is not suitable for people with stomach ulcers, serious kidney disease or asthma triggered by NSAIDs. During suspected dengue, NSAIDs can raise bleeding risk, so paracetamol is preferred unless a doctor says otherwise. Check other pain or cold medicines, so that two NSAIDs are never taken together. How to use Mefgesic tablet 250mg?

• Adults and children over 14 years: 500 mg to start, then 250 mg every 6 hours as needed, with food.
• For period pain, start at the first sign of cramps and continue for 2 to 3 days.
• Do not use it for more than 7 days without medical advice.
• Do not exceed the dose advised by the doctor.

Drug Interactions

• Aspirin and other NSAIDs: Together they raise the risk of ulcers and bleeding.
• Warfarin and blood thinners: Mefenamic acid may increase the bleeding risk.
• ACE inhibitors, ARBs and diuretics: It may weaken their blood pressure effect and strain the kidneys.
• Methotrexate and lithium: It can raise their blood levels and cause toxicity.

• Stomach bleeding and ulcers: It can irritate the stomach lining, so take it with food and avoid long use.
• Kidney problems: It may reduce kidney function, especially with dehydration.
