What is Nimixa tablet 200mg used for
- Treatment of travelers' diarrhea caused by non invasive strains of E. coli.
- Support for diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome.
- Higher 550mg strength for reducing recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy.
How does it work
Contains rifaximin, an antibiotic that stays mostly inside the gut.
It blocks bacterial protein production in the intestines.
Who should not use it
- People allergic to rifaximin or related antibiotics such as rifampin or rifabutin.
- Patients with diarrhea accompanied by fever or blood in the stool.
- Children under 12 years.
- Patients with diarrhea from organisms other than E. coli, unless confirmed suitable.

How to use Nimixa tablet 200mg?
- Taken by mouth, with or without food.
- Usual course for travelers' diarrhea is one tablet three times a day for 3 days.
- Each tablet swallowed whole with a glass of water.
- Oral rehydration solution should continue alongside the tablet.
- Full course should be completed.
Drug Interactions
- Cyclosporine: Can raise rifaximin levels.
- Warfarin: Combined use may affect blood clotting.
- Ketoconazole and clarithromycin: Can change how the body processes rifaximin.
- Other antibiotics: Combined use should only happen under medical guidance.
Risks and warnings
- Not for invasive diarrhea: Not effective if diarrhea is caused by fever or blood in the stool.
- Liver disease use: Patients using for hepatic encephalopathy should remain under specialist follow up.
- Limited absorption benefit: Stays mostly in the gut, lower risk of body wide side effects, but not a substitute for oral rehydration.
