What Experts Say
Sertraline belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class. It works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which raises serotonin levels between nerve cells. Higher serotonin activity is linked to improved mood regulation, reduced anxiety and better emotional control over time.
Clinical studies show sertraline is effective for major depression, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD and social anxiety disorder, with most patients responding within four to six weeks. Doctors usually start at a low dose and increase it gradually to reduce initial side effects like nausea and restlessness while allowing the body to adjust to the medicine.
Sertraline carries a boxed warning for increased suicidal thoughts in people under 25 years during early treatment, so close monitoring is essential. It should never be combined with MAOIs, and doctors weigh bleeding risk when it is used alongside NSAIDs, aspirin or blood thinners like warfarin.
