What Experts Say
Psychiatrists across Pakistan frequently choose Sertraline for patients starting antidepressant treatment because it has a favorable side effect profile compared with older tricyclic antidepressants. It works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, gradually restoring a more stable mood and reducing excessive worry.
Most patients need four to six weeks of consistent daily dosing before the full antidepressant effect becomes clear, even though sleep and energy sometimes improve sooner. Doctors usually start at a lower dose and increase it gradually, since a sudden jump to a high dose raises the chance of nausea and restlessness early on.
Physicians routinely warn young adults and teenagers about a small increased risk of suicidal thoughts in the first few weeks of treatment, especially before dose adjustments settle. Sertraline should never be stopped abruptly, since doing so can trigger dizziness, irritability and flu like symptoms known as discontinuation syndrome.
