What is Polyfer FA Tablet used for

Treats iron deficiency anemia caused by low dietary iron, blood loss, or increased need during pregnancy.

Also used to prevent anemia in people at higher risk.

How does it work

The iron replenishes the body's iron stores needed to make hemoglobin.

Folic acid supports new red blood cell production alongside the iron.

Who should not use it

• People with hemochromatosis or other iron overload conditions.
• People with thalassemia major or conditions where iron supplementation is unsafe.
• Anyone with a known allergy to iron salts or folic acid.
• People with active peptic ulcer disease or inflammatory bowel disease, unless approved.

Precautions

A blood test confirming iron deficiency is recommended before long-term supplementation.

Diabetic patients and people with liver disease should discuss with their doctor first.

Overdose in children is a medical emergency.

How to use Polyfer FA Tablet?

• Chew thoroughly before swallowing, or take as directed.
• Taking after a meal reduces stomach upset.
• Pairing with vitamin C source improves iron absorption.
• Tea and coffee within an hour of the dose can reduce absorption.
• Continue for as long as the doctor recommends.

Drug Interactions

• Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics: Iron can reduce absorption of these antibiotics.
• Levothyroxine: Iron can lower absorption of thyroid medicine.
• Calcium supplements: Can interfere with iron absorption.
• Antacids and proton pump inhibitors: Can reduce iron absorption.

Risks and warnings

• Iron overload risk: Extra iron can build up over time, so use beyond the prescribed course is not advised.
• Accidental childhood poisoning: Iron tablets are a common cause of accidental poisoning in young children.
• Thalassemia link: Iron supplements are not helpful or safe for thalassemia trait without proper testing.
• Constipation: Iron supplements commonly cause constipation.
