What Experts Say
Alprazolam binds to specific sites on the GABA-A receptor in the brain, strengthening the calming effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid, the nervous system's main inhibitory neurotransmitter. This reduces abnormal excitement in the brain and produces the anxiolytic, sedative and muscle relaxant effects doctors rely on for anxiety and panic disorders.
Physicians usually start Praz Tablet 0.25mg at the lowest effective dose, since alprazolam has a fast onset of action and a relatively short half life compared to many other benzodiazepines. Continuous use is generally limited to a few weeks with regular reassessment, since tolerance can build quickly and the anxiolytic effect may weaken with prolonged daily use.
Stopping the medicine always requires a gradual taper rather than sudden withdrawal, since abrupt discontinuation after regular use can trigger rebound anxiety or, in rarer cases, seizures. Doctors also monitor for excess sedation, memory lapses and fall risk in older patients, and avoid combining alprazolam with opioids or alcohol due to the danger of severe breathing suppression.

- Alcohol: Alcohol intensifies the sedative effect of alprazolam and increases the risk of dangerous breathing suppression.
- Other CNS Depressants: Sleep medicines, muscle relaxants and other benzodiazepines add to alprazolam's sedative effect and should be avoided unless a doctor approves.
- SSRIs: Some antidepressants such as fluoxetine can raise alprazolam levels in the blood, needing dose adjustment.
