What Experts Say
Mefenamic acid belongs to the fenamate class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It works by blocking the cyclooxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins, the chemical messengers responsible for pain, swelling and fever. This dual action against pain and inflammation makes it a common choice for conditions where inflammation is the main driver of discomfort.
Clinical studies support its use in dysmenorrhea because it lowers prostaglandin levels in the uterine lining, which eases cramping and can reduce heavy menstrual blood flow. The onset of relief is usually within 30 to 60 minutes of an oral dose, and the effect typically lasts around six hours, which is why dosing every six hours is standard practice.
Like other NSAIDs, mefenamic acid carries a risk of gastrointestinal irritation with prolonged use, so short courses at the lowest effective dose are generally recommended. Patients with kidney disease, heart conditions or a history of stomach ulcers need closer monitoring before starting therapy, and elderly patients are usually advised to use it for the shortest duration possible.
