What Experts Say
Escitalopram works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin at nerve endings, which increases the amount of serotonin available in the brain's mood regulating circuits. As the most selective SSRI available, it has a comparatively cleaner receptor profile than earlier antidepressants, which pharmacologists link to its generally favorable tolerability.
Clinical response to escitalopram typically builds gradually, with meaningful improvement in mood and anxiety symptoms appearing over two to six weeks of consistent use. Pharmacokinetic studies show it has a long half-life, supporting once daily dosing and a relatively smooth withdrawal curve when doses are tapered properly.
Cardiac and serotonergic safety are the main pharmacological considerations with escitalopram, since higher doses have been linked to dose dependent QT prolongation. Combining it with other serotonergic drugs raises the risk of serotonin syndrome, so clinicians review a patient's full medication list before prescribing. Gradual dose tapering is recommended when stopping treatment.
