What Experts Say
Mental health experts describe escitalopram as one of the more selective SSRIs available, meaning it targets serotonin reuptake with fewer effects on other brain chemicals. This selectivity is often linked to a comparatively milder side effect profile than older antidepressants, though individual response still varies from person to person.
Psychiatrists generally advise patience during the first few weeks of treatment, since mood and anxiety symptoms usually take two to four weeks to noticeably improve. Doctors recommend taking the tablet at the same time daily and avoiding sudden dose changes without medical guidance, since consistency supports steadier symptom control.
Experts caution that escitalopram should never be stopped abruptly, as this can trigger withdrawal like symptoms including dizziness, irritability and sensory disturbances. Regular follow up visits allow doctors to monitor progress, adjust dosage safely and watch for rare but serious effects such as mood changes or unusual bleeding.
