What Experts Say
The 1mg tablet is one of the smallest available strengths of risperidone and is commonly used as a starting point before increasing to higher doses. Risperidone works by blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT2A receptors, which helps calm the overactive brain signaling seen in psychosis and mania.
Starting at a low dose lets doctors watch for early side effects such as drowsiness or dizziness before the body adjusts. Many treatment plans begin with this strength for two to three days before moving upward, since a gradual increase lowers the chance of low blood pressure and improves how well a patient tolerates the medicine overall.
This strength is also used when reducing a dose that has become too strong for a patient, or in older adults and those with liver or kidney issues who process the drug more slowly. Regular checkups help confirm the dose still controls symptoms without causing excess sedation or metabolic side effects.
