What Experts Say
Rosuvastatin blocks HMG-CoA reductase, the liver enzyme that drives cholesterol production. This slows internal cholesterol synthesis and prompts liver cells to pull more LDL particles out of the bloodstream through increased receptor activity on the cell surface, lowering circulating LDL levels over several weeks.
Clinical evidence supports rosuvastatin for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events. Guidelines rank it among the higher intensity statins since it produces a stronger percentage drop in LDL cholesterol than several older agents even at moderate doses, which matters for patients who need a large reduction but cannot tolerate high doses of other statins.
Prescribers usually check baseline liver function and a lipid profile before starting therapy, then repeat testing during follow up visits. Muscle pain gets taken seriously since rare myopathy cases are linked to statins, and dosing is adjusted for kidney function, age and other medicines the patient already takes.
