About Saxenda Injection 6mg / ml
Saxenda Injection 6mg / ml contains liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for chronic weight management.
Uses
- Chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index of 30 or above (obesity)
- Chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index of 27 or above who also have a weight related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
- Used together with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, not as a standalone treatment
Benefits
- Supports gradual, sustained weight loss rather than rapid loss
- Reduces appetite and food cravings by acting on hunger centers in the brain
- Slows stomach emptying, helping patients feel full for longer after meals
- May improve blood sugar control and cardiometabolic markers alongside weight loss
What Experts Say
Liraglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the brain and gut, slowing gastric emptying and reducing appetite signals from the hypothalamus. This mechanism explains why weight loss with Saxenda tends to be gradual and sustained rather than rapid, since the drug works with the body's own satiety pathways instead of suppressing hunger artificially.
Physicians in Pakistan increasingly see Saxenda prescribed alongside diet and exercise counseling for patients with a body mass index of 30 or above, or 27 and above with a weight related condition such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension. The gradual weekly dose escalation schedule exists specifically to reduce nausea and vomiting, the most common reason patients discontinue GLP-1 therapy early.
Because of the thyroid C-cell tumor signal seen in rodent studies, doctors screen for a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 before prescribing. Regular monitoring for pancreatitis symptoms and gallbladder complaints is also recommended for the duration of treatment, since both risks are clinically established with liraglutide.
