What Experts Say

Tixylix combines promethazine, a sedating antihistamine, with pholcodine, an opioid type cough suppressant. Pholcodine acts on the cough center in the brain to reduce dry cough. Promethazine blocks histamine, which helps allergy related cough and congestion. It is best kept for the short term, usually only a few days at a time.

This blend is meant only for dry cough, not for cough with thick phlegm, because suppressing a productive cough can trap mucus. It is a short term treatment and should not be used in very young children. A productive cough with mucus, or a cough with fever or breathing trouble, should be assessed by a doctor.

Pholcodine has been withdrawn in the UK and EU since it may raise the risk of severe allergic reactions to certain anesthesia muscle relaxants. Anyone who took it should tell the anesthetist before surgery. Promethazine must not be given to children under two years. Always use the dose measure given with the bottle.

How to use Tixylix syrup?

• Take Tixylix syrup exactly as prescribed, using the measuring spoon or cup and not a kitchen spoon.
• Do not give to children under two years, and use in older children only on a doctor advice.
• Use for a short time, and see a doctor if cough continues beyond a few days.
• Take at bedtime if drowsiness is a problem.

Drug Interactions

• Alcohol, sedatives and sleeping pills: Together they increase drowsiness and slow breathing.
• MAO inhibitors: Should not be used with promethazine because side effects may become severe.
• Other antihistamines and anticholinergic medicines: They increase dry mouth, constipation and confusion.

• Children: Promethazine is not for children under 2 years because of breathing risk.
• Drowsiness: Avoid driving, machines and alcohol while taking it.
