What Experts Say
Valsartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers, or ARBs. It works by blocking angiotensin II from binding to receptors in blood vessel walls, which stops the hormone from narrowing vessels. As the vessels relax, blood pressure falls and the heart does not have to pump against as much resistance.
This same mechanism benefits patients with heart failure, since a weakened heart muscle struggles less when vascular resistance is lower. Large clinical trials have shown that valsartan also improves survival when started within a few days of a heart attack, especially in people whose heart pumping ability has dropped.
Valsartan is partly cleared through the kidneys and can raise blood potassium levels, so doctors typically check kidney function and electrolytes before starting treatment and at regular intervals afterward. Doses are usually increased gradually, and blood pressure is monitored closely during the first few weeks of therapy.

- Diuretics: Water pills can add to valsartan's blood pressure lowering effect and increase the chance of dizziness
