I want to ask my 4 and a half months old baby is not taking enough milk sometimes 3-4 ounces sometimes more. He prefers breastmilk than formula. I think breastfeeding is not enough. He never gets full of breastmilk. Secondly, he sleeps for 5-6 hours at night does not ask for milk. I wake him to drink milk but he hardly takes few sips and sleeps again. Is it necessary to wake him during his sleep?

Dear Patient,

If the child isn't asking for more milk then your feed must be sufficient. It's always good to wake these small babies up for a feed at least once at night cause there is a risk of their sugar dropping due to lack of feed.
What makes you feel your child is not taking enough milk? Does he cry for milk? Have you discussed this with his doctor using the milk requirements chart for different ages?
If your child is crying and refusing to take milk it may be cause he has stomachache or gas issues or difficulty breathing etc so explore this issue as well. Put a drop of norsaline nasal drops in each nose before a feed.
