Multilevel disc degeneration

My father suffers from backache and has pain in his right leg last since 2 months now. We got his MR Lumbosacral spine done and it was found that he has muscle spasm and multilevel disc degeneration. Now, they have suggested surgery but it is too risky? What should we do? Should we go for surgery or is there any more option related to this issue without surgery?

Surgery is normally not recommended for spasm. If there is disc degeneration then these cannot be restored by surgery. Did the doctor say he wants to decompress some nerve or a mass he wants to remove? What is the reason for surgery and what is the outcome? What are the possible risks? You should ask your doctor these questions.
