Osteomalacia Medicine

Asked for Male, 40 years

I am suffering from Osteomalacia. My orthopedic has prescribed me to take Chewcal every day for 6 months along with the use of Sunny D tab once in a month. I have heard that Chewcal causes gallstones. Previously a doctor had prescribed me to use Ca C 1000 plus. I just want to know which tablet is better for me Chewcal or CaC? Which tablet has least chances of producing gallstones?

Dear Patient,

Calcium in any form, along with many other substances can form gallstones. Naturally the higher the calcium content, the more likely it is to form gallstones. Given that you have osteomalacia, you will be required to have calcium and vitamin D to fortify your bones. You can ensure max absorption of calcium and maximum removal of excess calcium by having large amounts of water, inc your water intake slowly by 1-2 glass/wk and bring it upto 20 glasses a day. Walk regularly and avoid fatty foods to dec risk of gallstones. It's not necessary that all people who consume calcium will get stones.
