Seasonal Cough

My 2 years old son is suffering from seasonal cough 3 days.doctor gave him syrup KROFF . No sign of temp. Kindly let me know if he need antibiotic or any other syrup? Waiting for your response. Is steam is effective?

Dear Patient,

Even if a child has fever upto 102, most illnesses like this are viral in the first few days and DO NOT NEED antibiotics. Mothers of kids should be discouraged from using and considering antibiotics esp in the ABSCENCE of fever. So no, he doesnt need antibiotics. You can give him syrup zyrtec 5ml once at night for five days. Its best to nebulize with normal saline/give steam with clove in a small room. Apply woodward chestrub on his back and chest and avoid cold and sour foods. Give warm soups and yakhni.
