Travelling during Pregnancy

Asked for Female, 33 years

I will be about 9 weeks pregnant on and we are planning to travel to Karachi from Islamabad via train, which will be 24 hours long journey. Is it safe to travel this early or risky? Should we consider other options?

Dear Patient,

If you have a normal pregnancy train travel is safe. If you have a low placenta, diabetes or blood pressure or any blood disorders then its not advisable to travel for such a long period without medical care.
Its best to choose shorter periods of travel during pregnancy. However, precautions for regular pregnancy are that you should walk around every two hours during car/train travel, move all your leg joints in circular and back n forth directions. Drink 1-2 sips of water every hr to avoid dehydration. Sleep comfortably to avoid any unnecessary jerks.
