As the popularity of ethical consumption and clean eating continues to increase, some makeup and hygiene products are also coming under fire. Some deodorants contain aluminum, a highly controversial ingredient. Even though scientists have debunked the stories about aluminum’s role in certain diseases, aluminum does have some impacts. For instance, antiperspirants which have aluminum plug pores to reduce sweating can lead to overheating. Although there are many aluminum-free deodorants available in the market, you can also whip up your own at home if you want to be in charge of the ingredients that go into your deodorant. Here are some of the best natural deodorants you can make at home:

1- Baking Soda And Cornstarch:

Mix baking soda and cornstarch in equal parts to make your own deodorant. It will stop bacteria from spreading and also prevent odor. Just dust this mixture under your arms to reduce sweating. It should also be noted that there have been few actual studies regarding this but scientitsts have found that baking soda has anti-microbial effects. This technique is not reccomended for those with very sensitive skin as it could cause a rash.

2- Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice is great for killing body odor. The citric acid in lemon juice kills bacteria that gives an odor to sweat. It also has anti-prespirant effects as it closes up your pores, preventing you from sweating any further. However, you may want to steer clear of lemon juice if you have shaved recently or if you have sensitive armpits. Lemon also makes your skin more photsensitive, you you should be wary of sun exposure while using it.

3- Baking Soda And Essential Oils:

Although baking soda is great for fighting odor, it doesn’t have a fragrance. You can mix a few drops of essential oils such as lemongrass or lavender with baking soda to make your own fragrant antiperspirant.

4- Baking Soda And Water:

Baking soda is great for fighting bacteria and eliminating odor. Just mix a 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda and water to make a deodorant paste. The baking soda will keep your underarm area matte by drying it out and it will also prevent strong smells. This will help you feel fresh and clean.

5- Baby Powder:

Who said adults can’t use baby powder? Baby powder is great drying out armpits and keeps them sweat free. However, baby powder isn’t as strong as baking soda and you may need to reapply it to remain fresh all day. It will also be much gentler on the skin than any of the other options, making it one of the best natural deodorants. As an added bonus, it will also reduce friction and chafing.

6- Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil’s light fragrance and natural bacteria killing properties make it a great substitute for deodorants. Since it contains some fatty accids such as lauric acid, this oil has anti-bacterial properties, thus efficiently eliminating all odor. It will also moisturise your skin and prevent irritation, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin.

7- Witch Hazel:

Witch hazel is a great natural alternative to deodorant. It has antibacterial properties and is a great astringent.  It helps remove oil and moisturizes really well. It leaves no residue, making it one of the cleanest options on the list. Witch hazel contains many beneficial natural ingredients such as choline, flavonoids, saponins, bitters, and gallic acid apart from being a great astringent. You can always add an essential oil or other scent if you prefer a specific smell.

8- Apple Cider Vinegar:

Apple cider has antiseptic properties. Vinegar helps absorb body odor by killing the bacteria which creates body odor. Apple cider vinegar is also a good antifungal agent. As with all acidic substances, you have to be careful with how much you apply as it could cause skin irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.
