All human beings undoubtedly have some weaknesses and idiosyncrasies that make them unique, but there is a clear distinction between people with quirky traits and those who are on the verge of a mental disorder.

Mental issues are far more common than you would believe as people don’t talk about them as openly as physical illnesses. In Pakistan, around 10% ( 50 million people) of the population suffers from some sort of mental disorder.

While it is easy to assume that most people are mentally healthy, in reality, millions of adults, adolescents, and children struggle with mental health symptoms every now and then. They experience mild, moderate, and severe symptoms but often downplay them.

However, this could be dangerous, as symptoms must be evaluated by a mental health specialist. Sometimes, diagnosing and treating mental health conditions could be the difference between life and death. Here are some symptoms that require a mental health evaluation:

1-Frequent Physical And Verbal Aggression:

Some people are born with a difficult temperament and it takes very little to set them off. Some people also have bad tempers that are out of their control. However, if someone frequently snaps out at others without worrying about the consequences of their behavior, abuses others verbally or physically, tries to harm people, or jeopardizes their living conditions,  that is not mentally healthy.

There is something wrong which causes that aggression and a mental health expert can provide a bio-psycho-social assessment to analyze all the aspects of a person’s life such biological, social components, and psychological factors.

2-Self Harm:

A lot of people indulge in self-injurious behaviors such as cutting their arms, stomach, or legs with knives, blades, or other piercing objects to release stress. Some also verbalize suicidal threats by saying things like they want to kill themselves or they would be better off dead.

Such statements are called passive death wishes as they often signal a low level of intent as there is no mention of a plan. That is not to say that these threats should be taken any less seriously.

However, the more severe form of threats is those when a high degree of intent is exhibited, such as saying that I will jump off a bridge on Friday. If someone you know often expresses thoughts like this, you must get immediate help.

3-Extreme Tiredness And Depression:

Life is not easy and since today’s lifestyle is fast-paced, people are more likely to fall into depression. Some symptoms of depression include appetite and sleep disturbance, hopelessness, helplessness, low self-esteem, lack of interest in activities that were deemed enjoyable before, poor concentration, irritability, and weight loss or weight gain. These symptoms can mess with daily life and result in relationship or job loss. That’s why it is necessary to get help as soon as possible.
