Skincare isn’t just for women. Men stand to gain from it too. Especially considering that proper skin hygiene can help improve and prevent multitudes of dermatological conditions. Capping off at 1 minute, 20 seconds, here is the dermatologist approved no fuss daily skincare routine that every man should follow:

1-Cleanse (Twice Daily, 30 Seconds):

No, you don’t need a specialized cleanser for it, but steer clear of bathing soaps too. This is because most soaps contain harsh chemicals that strip away the skin’s nutrients and promote infections. Instead, opt for a specialized men’s face wash.

Start and end your day with gentle cleansing to open skin pores and remove bacteria, dirt, and excess oil accumulated overnight and throughout the day, as well as to improve the effectiveness of the next steps.

After a splash of warm water, lightly rub a coin-sized amount of facewash in circular motions to prevent loose skin and wrinkles, and finish with a cool water rinse. This will shrink the pores and prevent new dirt, oil, and bacteria from entering.

2-Exfoliate (Twice Weekly, 30 Seconds):

Exfoliators penetrate deeper into the skin to remove deep-lying impurities, prevent blockages, and lift facial hair to prevent cuts and ingrown hair during shaving.

However, since dead skin and underlying impurities take time to build up, limit it to twice a week (or 3-4 times for oily skin) to avoid skin irritation. Moreover, choose exfoliants according to skin type. For sensitive skin, opt for a chemical exfoliant, and use abrasive exfoliants if you have normal-oily skin.

3-Serum (Daily, 10 Seconds):

Applied in an even smaller amount than a face wash, regular serum use amplifies the cleansing benefits of face washes and exfoliants, along with acting as an anti-ageing and anti-blemish agent.

Simply take 2-3 drops of a specialized men’s face serum, and apply lightly to cover your whole face. Rinse with cold water after waiting for 10 seconds.

4-Moisturize (Daily, 10 Seconds):

The cleansing process can often leave skin dry, which is where moisturizers come in. Not only do they rehydrate the skin, but also help replenish essential nutrients lost during cleansing. Moreover, moisturizers also help lock in skin moisture and keep it firm; both of which are essential for wrinkle prevention.

Like a face wash, moisturizers should be applied twice daily in the morning and before bed to recover overnight moisture and contribute towards skin strengthening during the nightly repair process.

Use small amounts for oily skin to prevent further oiliness and the resultant acne breakouts. Apply enough to make sure that the skin is thoroughly hydrated if you have dry skin. However, increase the amount during winter, regardless of skin type. This is because low temperatures increase dryness by reducing sebum (natural skin oil) production.

Extra Tip: Apply a moisturizing lotion, especially on your elbows, ankles, knees, shoulders, hands, and lower legs right after showering if you have dry skin.

5-Sun Protection:

No amount of cleansing and moisturization is effective without regular sunscreen use. This is because repeated exposure to UV rays, regardless of weather, mutates skin cells; making them more prone to wrinkles, sun burns, dry patches, and even cancer.

So top off your daily skincare routine by applying a thin layer of lightweight sunscreen when stepping outside. For days with prolonged sun exposure, like an outdoor trip, or if your work involves staying outdoors, apply a broader spectrum sunscreen, preferably SPF 30.

Regular skincare can help prevent numerous dermatological conditions. However, it should not replace medical care, especially if you have a chronic or recurring skin condition like eczema, as it may affect other areas of the body if left untreated.
