APTT is an abbreviation for activated partial thromboplastin time. Generally, when there is damage to the blood vessels or a nick or cut to the skin, clotting factors are activated. Blood clots then form to become a barrier to the outpouring of the blood, and thus stop the bleeding.
APTT is the time that it takes for the blood to clot, and its test helps in gauging the effectiveness and performance of the clotting factors.
APTT test helps in measuring how long the blood takes to clot. In the test, a decalcified sample of blood is taken. It then undergoes different processes to ascertain the time it took for the formation of the blood clots. The test aids in assessing how well the clotting pathway and systems associated with the process are working.
The purpose of APTT is to check for the bleeding disorders. It also helps in checking the effectiveness of drugs like heparin, which are used in case of clotting problems.
