DEXA scan, also known as DXA scan, helps in measuring the mineral content in the bones. The scan uses low-grade x-rays to capture the bone density. It is an excellent way to diagnose problems like osteoporosis.
Bone mineral density or bone density is the amount of minerals in your bones. The better the bone density is, the stronger your bones will be.
Loss of too much bone density or mass can lead to conditions like osteoporosis and osteopenia. Alongside causing pain, it also posits greater risk of fractures as well.
DEXA scan is used for:
While the ultimate call is made by your healthcare provider, circumstances that merit the scan include:
Age: As bone mineral loss increases with age, hence older people need to get the scans.
Family history: Having a family history of osteoporosis puts one at risk for getting it, and hence monitoring is important.
History of fractures: Those with history of fracture also need DEXA scan.
Health: Those with health conditions like diabetes, lupus, kidney disease, liver disease, etc., might require the scan.
Medications: Certain drugs can promote the loss of bone mass.
The scan is done using x-rays. People have to lie down on the special table. The machine is then used to send x-rays to get the image. The machine then calculates the bone density, which gets interpreted by the experts.
The results are of two types, T score and Z score.
In T score, your bone density is compared to that of a healthy young adult. If your score is -1 or above, it is normal. If it is between -1.1 and -2.4, it is a case of osteopenia. A score of -2.5 and below is considered as osteoporosis.
In z score, your bone density is compared to people of your age group. If the figure is very haywire, you might need to get further tests.
Even though the radiation used is low energy, but there is still exposure to the radiation. It is also risky procedure for women who are pregnant.
The results from DEXA scan can take a few days.
