Prof. Dr. Zegham Abbas is one of the most skilled and experienced Gastroenterologists and
Hepatologists in Karachi. He is currently offering consultation at two hospitals and also conducts
his own research to further his field.
Qualifications
Prof. Dr. Zegham Abbas is a highly qualified medical professional and has numerous
qualifications and degrees. He has completed his MBBS from Dow Medical College in 1985 and
has also completed his FCPS (Medicine) in 1990, gaining accreditation from the College of
Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. He also completed a few fellowships abroad including three
FRCPs from Glasgow, Ireland and Edinburgh, making him an incredibly well qualified medical
professional.
Experience
Prof. Dr. Zegham Abbas has over 28 years of experience in his field. He is currently offering
consultations at Dr. Ziauddin Hospital and OMI Hospital. He is the head of department of
gastroenterology at Ziauddin Hospital and a consultant gastroenterologist at Aga Khan
University Hospital, where he also taught for 2 years. He is also the dean of the faculty of
gastroenterology at College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and the Governor of the
American College of Gastroenterology. Dr. Abbas also worked as a consultant at the Jinnah
Postgraduate Medical Center for four years
Activism
Prof. Dr. Zegham Abbas is present in many conferences and video interviews that aim to raise
awareness on health issues related to his area of expertise. In one video he spoke about
“finding the missing million” which means finding those patients who have hepatitis B and C
without knowing it. A large percentage of the population of our country carries this virus without
knowing that they do. If this virus is left untreated it can result in the body being extremely
damaged and can lead to even more serious illnesses such as advanced fibrosis. The WHO
has a global goal to eradicate hepatitis by 2030.
Special Interests
Prof. Dr. Zegham Abbas has many special areas of interest; he conducts his own research
related to the field of gastroenterology. In one paper he looked at the impact of metabolic risk
factors on the severity and outcome of patients with alcohol associate acute-on-chronic liver
failure. The study looked at 1216 patients with a mean age of 42 years and 98% male patients.
The study found that those who were obese had a higher rate of mortality within a 30 day
period.
