Bisphosphonates are used as first-line pharmacologictreatment for osteoporosis. In patients who cannot tolerate or whose symptoms do not improve with bisphosphonate therapy, teriparatide (Forteo) and denosumab (Prolia) are effective alternative medications to prevent osteoporotic fractures
