What Experts Say
Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that stops acne causing bacteria from producing the proteins they need to multiply and spread across the skin. Applied topically, it lowers the bacterial load in and around clogged pores without the wider, whole body effects of an oral antibiotic taken by mouth.
Dermatology references note that clindamycin also carries a mild anti-inflammatory action on the skin, which helps calm the redness and swelling that come with active acne lesions, separate from its direct antibacterial effect on the bacteria themselves living inside a blocked pore.
Because bacteria can develop resistance to topical antibiotics over time, experts generally recommend using clindamycin alongside benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid rather than as a long term standalone treatment. This combination approach slows resistance and also improves overall acne clearance across the treated skin area.
