About Capoten Tablet 50mg
Captopril, an ACE inhibitor, used to manage high blood pressure and heart failure.
Uses
- Treats high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Manages heart failure, often combined with other heart medicines
- Improves survival after a heart attack in patients with reduced heart function
- Helps protect kidney function in some patients with diabetic kidney disease
Benefits
- Lowers blood pressure by relaxing narrowed blood vessels
- Reduces strain on the heart in patients with heart failure
- May slow the progression of kidney damage linked to diabetes
- Acts faster than some other ACE inhibitors due to its short onset
What Experts Say
Captopril blocks the angiotensin converting enzyme, which lowers production of angiotensin II in the body. This relaxes narrowed blood vessels and reduces the workload on the heart. It also lowers aldosterone release, helping the body clear excess fluid and sodium during heart failure and easing breathlessness over time.
Captopril has a shorter half life than most other ACE inhibitors, so doctors usually prescribe it two to three times a day rather than once daily. Taking it on an empty stomach, roughly an hour before meals, improves how completely the body absorbs each dose and supports steady blood pressure control throughout the day.
Doctors check kidney function and blood potassium levels before starting captopril and periodically during treatment. This matters most for older patients and anyone with existing kidney disease, since the drug can raise potassium levels and reduce blood flow through the kidneys in certain conditions or dehydration states.
