Risks and warnings

Generally, Caricef is well tolerated. However, you should know its risks and warnings so that you do not take it when the risk is greater than the benefit.

When your healthcare provider prescribes you any medication, they do so based on the risk versus benefit ratio. Therefore you should give a complete medication and medical history to your healthcare provider. In this way, you can avoid the adverse effects of certain medications.

The risks and warnings associated with Caricef are:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant, do not take cefixime unless your doctor advises it. It can affect your baby’s health. Breastfeeding mothers should also consult a healthcare provider before taking it.

  • Allergic to cefixime

If you are allergic to cefixime, do not take Caricef or any other similar medicine as it can result in a life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock.

  • Non-susceptible organisms

Cefixime should only be given to a patient when the bacteria is sensitive to it. If not, it can lead to antibiotic resistance, making it difficult to treat infections next time. This mostly applies to urinary tract infections and infections of the nose, ear, and throat.

  • Seizures

If you have had a history of seizures or you have renal impairment, you must avoid the use of cefixime as it can provoke seizures.

  • Kidney failure

If your kidneys do not work well, the healthcare provider may lower the dose of the drug. This happens because your kidneys are meant to excrete out the waste and toxins and if that does not happen, the toxins may build up in your body, leading to severe adverse effects. Therefore, you must inform your health care provider about any health conditions you may have.

  • Gastric ulcers

People suffering from gastric ulcers and acidity must take cefixime with extreme caution because it affects your gastrointestinal tract.
It can also cause ulceration in your stomach lining when taken for the long term. Your doctor may prescribe a gastroprotective agent along with it.

  • Liver diseases

Patients with liver disease should take cefixime with caution. It is because your liver helps the metabolism and excretion of drugs. When it does not work efficiently due to a disease, it can cause accumulation of the drug in your body, leading to severe adverse effects.

  • Anticoagulants or bleeding disorders

If you are taking anticoagulants for thinning of your blood, or you have any bleeding disorder, take cefixime with the advice of a healthcare provider.
