What Experts Say
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell membrane, disrupting cell wall construction and leading to bacterial cell death. This mechanism makes it effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Cefixime is well-distributed throughout body tissues and fluids, including respiratory and urinary tract secretions, making it particularly valuable for treating infections in these sites. The antibiotic is considered safer than earlier-generation cephalosporins due to reduced cross-reactivity with penicillin allergy.
Peak plasma concentration is achieved within 2 to 4 hours of oral administration. The drug undergoes hepatic metabolism with a serum half-life of approximately 3 to 4 hours, allowing for convenient twice-daily or once-daily dosing depending on the infection severity.
