What Experts Say
Cefiget contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that binds to penicillin-binding proteins on the bacterial cell wall. This blocks the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis, the process that builds and maintains the bacterial cell wall, causing the wall to weaken until the bacterial cell ruptures and dies.
As a third-generation cephalosporin, Cefixime covers a broad range of gram negative bacteria more effectively than earlier cephalosporin generations, which is part of why it is commonly used for typhoid fever in regions where Salmonella typhi remains a frequent cause of prolonged fever.
Cefixime is absorbed from the gut and cleared mainly through the kidneys, with a portion excreted unchanged in urine. Antacids and iron supplements can bind to Cefixime in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed, which is why timing matters when other medicines are taken alongside it.

Drug Interactions
Cefixime has a few notable interactions, mostly related to absorption and clearance. The following should be noted:
- Antacids and Iron Supplements: Taking these within two hours of Cefiget can reduce how much is absorbed, lowering its effectiveness.
- Warfarin: Cefiget may increase Warfarin's blood thinning effect, raising the risk of bleeding.
- Probenecid: This medicine slows the clearance of Cefixime through the kidneys, raising its blood levels.
- Carbamazepine: Cefiget may increase Carbamazepine blood levels, raising the risk of side effects.
Risks and warnings
- Penicillin allergy: Patients with a severe penicillin allergy have a small but real chance of also reacting to Cefiget.
- Gastrointestinal infection risk: Antibiotic use, including Cefiget, can occasionally lead to a bowel infection that causes severe diarrhea.
- Kidney disease: Dose adjustment is needed in patients with significant kidney impairment.
- Prolonged or repeated use: Using Cefiget when it is not needed, or not completing the full course, contributes to antibiotic resistance.
- Pregnancy: Cefiget should only be used during pregnancy when clearly needed and directed by a doctor.
- Breastfeeding: Cefixime passes into breast milk in small amounts, so a doctor should be consulted before use while nursing.
- Children: Dosing in children should always be based on their weight and confirmed by a doctor.
