What Experts Say
Cefixime is a third generation oral cephalosporin that blocks bacterial cell wall formation, causing the bacteria to weaken and die. It resists breakdown by many bacterial enzymes, which allows it to work against a broader range of gram negative organisms than older cephalosporins, while sparing much of the normal gut flora compared to broader spectrum drugs.
The 200mg per 5ml strength is a double strength formulation, meaning a smaller volume delivers an effective dose. This is useful for children and patients who struggle with large syrup volumes, and it supports once or twice daily dosing depending on the age, weight and severity of the infection being treated.
Doctors frequently prescribe cefixime suspension for common childhood infections and for uncomplicated typhoid fever, since it reaches good concentrations in blood and tissue after oral intake. Its convenient dosing schedule also helps parents complete the full course without missed doses, which lowers the risk of resistance developing.
