What Experts Say
Cefixime is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by disrupting the bacterial cell wall, which causes the bacteria to die off. Its once daily dosing at this strength is a practical advantage over antibiotics that need multiple daily doses.
Urinary tract infections and respiratory infections remain among the most common reasons Pakistani patients are prescribed an oral cephalosporin, and doctors typically choose Cefixime when a broader spectrum option is needed than a first line antibiotic. Culture based prescribing is encouraged where possible, since resistance patterns vary by region.
Physicians emphasize finishing the entire prescribed course, since an incomplete course is a major contributor to antibiotic resistance nationally. Patients with any history of penicillin or cephalosporin allergy are advised to inform their doctor before starting this capsule, given the possibility of a cross reaction.
