What Experts Say
Cefixime is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that stops bacteria from building their cell walls by binding to penicillin binding proteins. This bactericidal action makes it effective against many gram negative organisms such as E coli, Klebsiella and Haemophilus influenzae, along with several gram positive organisms like Streptococcus pyogenes.
In adults, the 400mg capsule is commonly used as a single daily dose because Cefixime has a long elimination half life. Clinical studies support its use for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bronchitis, pharyngitis and typhoid fever, with cure rates comparable to other oral cephalosporins in susceptible infections.
Because Cefixime does not reliably cover Pseudomonas or most strains of Staphylococcus aureus, experts stress that treatment should be guided by culture and sensitivity results whenever possible, especially for recurrent infections. Overuse or premature discontinuation raises the risk of antibiotic resistance and treatment failure.
