What Experts Say
Cefixime is a third generation cephalosporin that interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin binding proteins and stops bacteria from building a stable cell wall, which causes the bacteria to die. This makes it effective against many gram negative organisms including E coli, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pyogenes.
Pediatric studies show Cefixime suspension achieves good cure rates in acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in children. Its long half life allows once or twice daily dosing, which supports better treatment completion in young patients compared to antibiotics needing more frequent doses.
Experts caution that Cefixime should be reserved for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial, since overuse contributes to resistance. Culture and sensitivity testing is recommended for recurrent or severe infections. Parents are advised to complete the full course even if symptoms improve early, to prevent relapse and resistant strains.
