What Experts Say
Dermatologists typically bring in clobetasol propionate ointment when thicker, more resistant plaques on the elbows, knees, palms or soles have not settled with moderate strength steroid creams. Its high potency allows it to penetrate thickened skin that weaker treatments often fail to clear, which is why many specialists view it as a step up rather than a first choice.
Because these plaques can be stubborn, experts still keep courses short, usually no longer than two consecutive weeks, with a weekly ceiling of around 50 grams. Extending treatment beyond this raises the risk of local skin thinning and, in more extensive use, systemic steroid absorption.
Specialists usually reassess the skin after each short course before deciding whether another cycle is needed. If a stubborn patch keeps returning, doctors often look at combination approaches rather than continuous clobetasol use, to limit cumulative steroid exposure over time.

How to use Clobederm Ointment?
- Clean and dry the affected patch before each application
- Apply a thin film over the plaque once or twice a day, exactly as your dermatologist has advised
- Massage gently until it is absorbed, avoid heavy rubbing on thickened skin
- Do not bandage or wrap the area tightly unless your doctor tells you to
- Limit continuous use to a maximum of two weeks per course
- Keep total weekly use under 50 grams
- Wash your hands thoroughly afterward unless treating the hands
Drug Interactions
- Using another topical corticosteroid on the same patch can compound the risk of skin thinning
- Other topical products layered on the same area may alter how much clobetasol penetrates the skin
- Combining with oral or injectable steroids can increase the total steroid load on the body
- Standard oral medicines are not known to interact meaningfully with correctly applied topical clobetasol
Risks and warnings
- Meant for short, doctor supervised courses rather than everyday long term use
- Do not apply to the face, groin, underarms or thin skinned areas unless specifically directed
- Repeated or prolonged use over the same patch can thin the skin permanently
- Treating large areas raises the chance of the steroid being absorbed into the body
- Avoid use on skin that is broken, infected or oozing without medical advice
- Do not stop a long course abruptly, ask your doctor about tapering off
- Extra caution is needed in infants, young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Keep away from the eyes to avoid raising pressure inside the eye
