About Dermovate Ointment 0.05%

Dermovate Ointment contains clobetasol propionate, a potent corticosteroid for severe skin inflammation.

Uses

  • Severe plaque psoriasis unresponsive to milder treatments
  • Chronic eczema and atopic dermatitis flare ups
  • Lichen planus and lichen simplex chronicus
  • Discoid lupus erythematosus skin lesions
  • Other short term, steroid responsive inflammatory skin conditions

Benefits

  • Reduces redness, swelling and itching within days of correct use
  • Works on thick, scaly plaques that weaker steroids cannot clear
  • Speeds healing in stubborn patches on elbows, knees and scalp
  • Restores comfort and sleep quality during severe flare ups

What Experts Say

Dermatologists classify clobetasol propionate as a super potent, Class I corticosteroid reserved for skin disease that has not responded to milder steroids. It works by calming inflammation and slowing the abnormal skin cell turnover seen in psoriasis. Doctors usually prescribe Dermovate Ointment only after weaker steroids have failed.

Prescribing guidance generally limits continuous use to two weeks at a time, with a maximum weekly quantity of 50 grams for adults, since the skin can absorb more of a potent steroid than intended if it is used too often or on broken skin. Doctors also avoid the face, groin and underarms beyond very short courses, since skin there absorbs medicine faster and thins more easily.

In Pakistan, chronic skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema are common, and many patients self medicate with leftover steroid creams for months without review. Doctors caution against this with Dermovate Ointment specifically, since prolonged unsupervised use raises the risk of skin thinning and, rarely, suppressed natural cortisol production.

How to use Dermovate Ointment 0.05%?

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice daily as directed
  • Rub in gently until the ointment disappears, do not rub vigorously
  • Wash hands after application unless treating the hands themselves
  • Limit continuous treatment to two weeks unless a doctor extends it
  • Do not cover treated skin with airtight bandages unless a doctor advises it
  • Avoid applying to the face, groin or underarms without medical guidance

Drug Interactions

  • Avoid combining with other topical corticosteroids on the same area, as this increases the risk of skin thinning
  • Do not use with occlusive dressings or airtight bandages unless a doctor advises it, since these raise how much steroid the skin absorbs
  • Combining with other topical products containing retinoids or strong exfoliants can worsen skin irritation
  • Strong oral antifungal or antiviral medicines that inhibit CYP3A4 may theoretically raise systemic steroid absorption if used on large treated areas, though this is rare with normal topical use

Risks and warnings

  • Prolonged or excessive use can thin the skin and cause visible stretch marks
  • Extended use over large body areas may suppress the body's natural cortisol production
  • Do not use on broken skin, infected skin, acne or untreated fungal infections
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, as it can raise pressure inside the eye
  • Not recommended for children under one year unless a specialist prescribes it
  • Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only under a doctor's supervision
  • Do not stop a long course suddenly, as symptoms can rebound and worsen
