What Experts Say
Glimepiride is a second generation sulfonylurea that lowers blood sugar by prompting the pancreas to release more insulin and by improving how muscle and fat tissue use the insulin already present in the body.
Physicians across Pakistan commonly start newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients on this 1mg strength because it carries a lower baseline risk of hypoglycemia than higher doses while still giving a meaningful reduction in blood glucose. The dose is usually reviewed after a few weeks using fasting glucose readings and HbA1c before any increase is considered, and kidney function is checked since clearance affects how long the drug stays active in the body.
A large proportion of adults with type 2 diabetes in Pakistan are managed initially with a single oral agent alongside diet and exercise changes. Physicians across Pakistan often keep patients on this starting dose for as long as it maintains target blood sugar, adding metformin or increasing the dose only if control weakens over time.
