- Once daily dosing supports better routine adherence
- Helps achieve tighter glycemic control when lower doses are insufficient
- May lower the long term risk of diabetes related complications when sugar stays controlled
What Experts Say
Glimepiride belongs to the second generation sulfonylurea class of oral antidiabetic drugs. It works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin and by helping muscle and fat tissue respond better to the insulin already in the body.
Physicians across Pakistan often move a patient up to the 3mg strength once a lower dose no longer keeps fasting and post meal glucose readings in range. Because glimepiride carries a genuine risk of hypoglycemia, the step up is usually gradual and guided by home glucose logs and periodic HbA1c testing rather than a fixed schedule.
Type 2 diabetes affects a very large share of adults in Pakistan, and many patients eventually need more than one drug to stay controlled. Physicians across Pakistan frequently pair this strength with metformin or, in select cases, with insulin, while checking kidney and liver function periodically to keep the combination safe.
