What Experts Say
Empagliflozin belongs to the SGLT2 inhibitor class. It works by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, causing excess sugar to be removed through urine instead of staying in the bloodstream and raising blood glucose levels further.
Endocrinologists and cardiologists in Pakistan increasingly prescribe empagliflozin for type 2 diabetics who also have heart disease or are at high cardiovascular risk, since it has shown benefits beyond blood sugar control in several major international studies. It is now used earlier in treatment as awareness grows of its heart and kidney protective effects.
Doctors advise patients to maintain good hydration while on this medicine, since it increases urination, and to watch for genital infections, a known side effect linked to how the drug changes urine composition. Patients are also reminded to pause the tablet temporarily during illness with poor fluid intake.
