What Experts Say
Diclofenac sodium injection delivers the drug directly into muscle tissue, allowing it to reach the bloodstream faster than a tablet taken by mouth. This route makes it useful in situations where quick, strong pain relief is needed, such as kidney stone pain, acute gout, or pain after surgery.
The injection works the same way as oral diclofenac, by blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes and lowering prostaglandin production, but the faster absorption route means effects are usually felt within twenty to thirty minutes. It is intended for short term use rather than daily long term therapy.
Because it is an NSAID given by injection, it carries the same warnings as oral diclofenac regarding stomach, kidney, and heart risk, plus an added risk of injection site pain, swelling, or muscle damage if not administered correctly, so it should only be given by a trained healthcare professional in a clinical setting.
