What Experts Say
Haloperidol belongs to the first generation antipsychotic class and works mainly by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. This action helps calm overactive dopamine signaling that drives hallucinations, delusions and disorganized thinking in psychotic disorders. Its strong receptor blocking effect makes it useful for rapid control of acute agitation and severe psychotic symptoms.
Clinical evidence supports haloperidol as an effective option for schizophrenia, acute mania and Tourette syndrome, though it carries a higher risk of movement related side effects compared with newer atypical antipsychotics. Doctors often start with a low dose and adjust gradually while watching for tremor, stiffness or restlessness. Regular follow up allows early detection of these effects before they become severe.
In routine practice across Pakistan, haloperidol remains popular because it is inexpensive and widely available compared with newer alternatives. Patients are usually advised not to stop the medicine suddenly, since abrupt discontinuation can trigger a return of psychotic symptoms or withdrawal type reactions. Long term use calls for periodic review of dose, side effects and overall mental health response.
