What Experts Say
Haloperidol belongs to the butyrophenone class of typical antipsychotics. It works mainly by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain, lowering the excess dopamine activity linked to hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking seen in psychotic disorders and acute mania.
Doctors value this drug for its strong and predictable antipsychotic effect, especially in acute agitation where a fast calming response is needed. Oral tablets are absorbed within one to two hours, and decades of clinical use give physicians wide dosing experience across age groups and care settings.
Because haloperidol also blocks dopamine pathways outside the brain areas tied to psychosis, it carries a meaningful risk of movement related side effects such as stiffness, tremor, and restlessness. Experts stress that careful dose titration and regular monitoring help preserve its clinical benefit while limiting this risk over time.
