What Experts Say
Cefixime belongs to the third generation cephalosporin family. It works by stopping bacteria from building a proper cell wall, which weakens the bacterial structure and leads to its death. This mechanism makes it effective against many gram negative organisms that commonly cause infections in Pakistan.
Doctors often prefer cefixime for outpatient treatment because it is taken once or twice daily and reaches good concentrations in urine, throat tissue and middle ear fluid. This convenience improves the chances that patients complete the full course, which matters for reducing antibiotic resistance.
Clinical guidance still stresses that cefixime should only be used when a bacterial cause is confirmed or strongly suspected. Viral infections such as common cold or flu will not respond to it, and unnecessary use raises the risk of resistant bacteria developing in the community.
